Robert “Bobby” Joel Sims Jr. passed away Tuesday Sept. 21, 2021 at Overton Brooks VA Hospital in Shreveport, La.

He was born Jan. 19, 1947 to Robert Sr. and Donnie (Burgess) Sims in Quitman. He married the love of his life, Brenda (East) Sims, on Oct. 12, 1968.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Mervin and Imogene East; a sister, Donnie Joe Tarrant; a brother, James “PeeWee” Sims; brothers-in-law, Charles Tarrant, Neil Cameron, Duane Grundy and Russell East; a nephew, Roy Don Burke; and a niece, Karen Dunn.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda of the home; a sister, Patricia Ann Cameron of Quitman; and sisters-in-law, Debby Grundy of Miami, Okla., Donna Sims of Quitman and Lisa Jewett of Fairland, Okla. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews (also great and great-great), cousins, friends and neighbors whom he considered family.

Bobby grew up and attended school in Quitman. He was drafted into the army in 1966 and served with the 577th Engineer Battalion for two years during the Vietnam War. He started working at Wood County Electric Co-op in September 1968 where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 2003.

Bob and Brenda moved to the Avinger/Jefferson area in 2004. He was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Jefferson. He loved to hunt and fish and tell tall tales with the neighbors. He also loved the reunions with his Vietnam brothers and looked forward to visiting with them.

The Celebration of Life will be Oct. 23, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, 225 County RD 1648, Jefferson. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Liberty Baptist Church, Jefferson, Simmons Cemetery, Jefferson or the charity of your choice.
