Safety lessons
Children in the Mineola area have received bicycle safety instructions from the Mineola Pilot Club and the Mineola Police Department since 2000. Second graders at Mineola Primary School ride through an obstacle course on bicycles giving the proper hand signals. Each one receives a helmet from the Pilot Club. In March first and second graders watched the BrainMinder puppet show put on by Pilot and Anchor Club members and learn how to protect their brains. The bike safety program culminates with two children’s names drawn for winning two new bikes. This year Emmalee Nash and Branson Pierce won the bikes, but since Branson had a new bike, he asked that the Pilots draw another name. His classmate and friend, Ari Khadka won. An act of kindness by a second grader made both boys, their teachers and Pilot members happy. (Courtesy photo)
