Sales tax receipts continue to rise

Five of six Wood County cities reported higher sales tax income in April than a year ago.

Only Winnsboro is lagging behind 2022 tax collections.

The April report from the state comptroller’s office includes taxes collected by merchants in February and reported to the state in March.

The six cities received $474,134 compared to $462,927 a year ago, despite Winnsboro dropping 18% or $26,000.

Each of the cities collects a 1.5% tax on retail sales, rebated monthly by the state.

Wood County also collects a 0.5% tax, which resulted in April income of $219,118, a 5.2% gain from last year when $208,215 was received.

For the first four months of the year, the six cities plus the county have earned $3,087,689 in tax receipts compared to $2,912,459 a year ago.

Alba’s collections are almost 19% ahead of last year. The city has received $111,174 in 2023 and had earned $93,614 a year ago. The April rebate of $22,881 is up by 18.4%.

Hawkins sales tax income for the year is $162,660 for a 22% gain. The monthly rebate of $38,401 rose 37% from $27,988 a year ago.

Mineola experienced an 8.6% gain in April at $217,068 compared to $199,915 last year. For the year the city has received $1,002,165, up 9%. It was $918,840 a year ago.

Quitman’s receipts of $72,310 in April are up by 7.16%. The yearly total of $311,011 is a 6.74% gain over last year’s $291,371.

Winnsboro has collected $482,120 this year, a drop of 8.66% from $527,876 a year ago.

Yantis is 30% ahead of last year, with $43,285 collected so far. The April rebate of $9,930 is up 26%.

Wood County income for the year is up 6.67% to $975,271.
