Sales tax collections in Wood County took a step back for the first time since the initial recovery from the pandemic business restrictions of two years ago.

The June report from the state comptroller’s office showed collections for six cities plus the county at $738,486. The June report a year ago had income totaling $759,427.

Only the cities of Mineola and Quitman showed improvement over June 2021.

Mineola’s monthly rebate increased by 6.56% to $244,214 while Quitman’s was up 2.06% to $71,844.

The June rebate reflects primarily sales made by merchants in April and reported to the state in May. The state rebates entities their shares monthly.

The six Wood County cities each collect a 1.5% sales tax on top of the 6.25% state sales tax. Wood County collects an additional half percent for a total tax rate of 8.25% inside cities.

Wood County income fell sightly to $230,696. It was $231,827 a year ago.

Alba’s rebate fell 14% to $23,688 from $27,539.

Hawkins saw a 37% decline to $36,138. It was $57,609 a year ago.

Winnsboro income of $123,748 was off 7.6% from a year ago.

Yantis experienced a 9% drop to $8,156.

For the year, only Hawkins and Yantis lag behind 2021, and by only a small percentage.

Wood County remains 12.43% ahead of last year with $1,394,088 in sales tax income for the first half of 2022.

Mineola is ahead by 12% at $1,435,797.

Winnsboro sales tax receipts are 7.14% higher than a year ago at $804,333.

Quitman has seen a 6% increase and has received $456,815 in 2022.

Alba is also 12% ahead of 2022 with receipts of $149,263.

Hawkins sales tax income for the year totals $208,520, a decline of less than 4% from last year – $8,300.

Yantis is less than 3% behind 2022 with $52,069 for six months, or about $1,500 less.

Together the entities have earned $4,500,887 in 2022. At this time in 2021 the total was $4,105,124.
