Some of that old-time religion
The First Baptist Church in Quitman kicked off its 175th anniversary celebration with an old-fashioned brush arbor service Sunday, complete with period clothing and transportation. Bella Allen and Heather Allen show their dresses and matching bonnets. Chris Gaby, church deacon; former pastor Jimmy Martin, who served from 1990-93; and Larry Knowlton and Glen Megil, friends of Gaby, made their way on horseback. The celebration continues on Sunday, July 6 with a patriotic event including a meal after the service of hot dogs, ice cream and water melon. The winner of the kiss-a-pig fundraiser will also be revealed. The final event will be held in November. The church is the oldest in the county and one of the oldest in East Texas.
