Stephen Kent Gibson 1949-2023

Funeral services for Stephen Kent Gibson, 73, of Quitman are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church of Quitman with Bro. Fred Morrow officiating. Interment will follow at the Golden City Cemetery in Golden, with services under the direction of Lowe-Gardner Funeral and Cremations in Quitman. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m.   

Kent was born in Tyler on June 28, 1949 to the late Morris Blane and Verlon (Kennemer) Gibson. He was raised in Golden and graduated from Quitman High School in 1967. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from East Texas State University in Commerce. On July 7, 1972, Kent married Vicki Lynn Martin in Mount Pleasant. They lived in Tyler, Mount Pleasant, Hughes Springs and Pittsburg before moving to Quitman in 1984, where they raised their two sons, Brad and Blane. 

Kent began his work as an accountant in Hughes Springs, working alongside his cousin, Carroll Kennemer. He was the Camp County auditor and Wood County auditor for several years before going to work for James Cavender.  He was the accounting manager for Cavender’s Boot City, where he worked for 26 years before retiring in 2018. 

He was involved with the Quitman Rotary and served as treasurer for the Quitman Youth Foundation. He enjoyed watching sports and loved being with his grandkids.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Gibson, in 2014; and his parents, M.B. and Verlon Gibson.

He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Brad and Cara Gibson of Golden and Blane Gibson of Windsor, Colo.; grandchildren, Conner and Braxten Gibson of Golden, Camden and Landry Gibson of Windsor, Colo.; sister, Mary Woodall of Duncanville; brother, Jerry H. and wife, Lynda Gibson of Quitman; close cousins, Larry Gibson of Golden, Susan Gibson Overstreet of Sunnyvale, Carroll Kennemer of Palestine and Stan and Pam Smith of Quitman; sisters-in-law, Joyce Raney and Nicki Taylor; brothers-in-law, Bill Cox and Ron Raney, all of Camden, Ark.; special friends and neighbors, Tony and Kathy Gilbreath of Quitman, and honorary son, John Chatham of Pittsburg. 

Serving as pallbearers will be family members, Mike Cox, Greg Cox, Jeremy Taylor, Marty Billingsley, Rodney Raney, Steven Woodall, Michael Woodall, Jerry L. Gibson, Zach Gibson, Clay Smith and Chuck Black.
