Taller Jackets blast Eustace

The Mineola Yellowjackets took good advantage of that fortuitous basketball advantage – height – as they defeated Eustace on Dec. 20, 80-34.

Mineola put up 49 points in the first half, a strong offensive effort. They did it by cleaning up on the boards, forcing Eustace turnovers and playing sound offensive basketball.

Most noticeable was the number of assists which Mineola accumulated. The offense seemed to appreciate the concept of ‘making the extra pass’ as they consistently found their teammates for better shot opportunities.

Also reassuring to see in the first district contest was the number of backdoor cuts and slipping of screens for inside looks at the basket that the Jackets demonstrated. As expected of any Mineola basketball squad, they also made great use of inbound plays.

While Zane Strange and Caiden Beck corralled rebounds vertically, Aidan Shepherd and Colton McMahon muscled out space in the lane. The two-dimensional play around the basket ensured Mineola’s domination in the game.

The number of Eustace turnovers also presented the Jackets with a great opportunity to get repetitions at finishing on a break.  That experience should pay great dividends as district play continues.

The visiting Grand Saline Indians will give Mineola a whole different set of challenges. The Indians will be in Mineola on Friday, Jan. 3 as district play continues.
