Tigers claw A-G Panthers in non-district contest
The Alba-Golden Panthers opened their home season on Tuesday when they hosted the Troup Tigers. The visitors took away a 69-37 win on the strength of a fast-break, offensive effort.
Troup ran at every opportunity, especially when securing a defensive rebound. Once the ball was in hand an outlet pass – usually long – followed. The Tigers then aggressively finished at the basket.
At the end of one quarter, Troup had built a 24-12 lead.
For the Panthers, senior guard Cameron Lennon figured in 10 of the 12 first-quarter Alba-Golden points. He finished with a team-leading 15 points and largely frustrated the Troup point guard throughout the game.
The second quarter opened with Boogie Trimble taking a charge. The fortunes favored Troup however. A mid-quarter run by the Tigers featured a second chance basket, a steal and score of a telegraphed pass from the Panthers, and a nicely executed backdoor play.
At the half the score stood 34-18, Tigers.
The Panthers opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run. They did it with better court awareness and pure hustle. Lennon found Garrett Wright for a score on a nicely-executed assist.
Troup took the challenge and began to pour it on. They outscored the Panthers in the remaining quarter and a half by 16 points.
There is much promise in the Alba-Golden side. Once the quick-footed and well-conditioned squad becomes more adept at finishing around the basket, close games will follow. Additionally, both Panther post players – Blake Harris and Landon Dunham – will become more comfortable taking close-in shots. Each has a nice touch and they will surely develop a better sense of ‘taking the shot’ when afforded the opportunity.
Fans can look for Lennon to lead a talented back court and consistently find his way to the basket.
The 2024-25 Panther roster is composed of: 0 Brandt Peterson, 1 Boogie Trimble, 2 LB Jones, 3 Blake Harris, 4 Cameron Lennon, 11 Garrett Wright, 13 Sam Olson, 14 Wyatt Sutton and 30 Landon Dunham.
