Track and field athletes move on to showcase talents at state meet

Wood County will be well-represented at the UIL high school state track and field meet this week in Austin.

From Mineola, Tierany Neighbors looks to challenge the state record in the pole vault after winning the regional meet with a 14’ vault.

She is tops among the nine qualifiers by two feet. The vaulters take the field at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 1.

Teammate Raylie Peebles returns to state to compete in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:18.83 ranks 8th. She runs at 5:20 p.m. Thursday.

Bryson Hobbs will represent Quitman in the long jump. He recorded a 23’1.5” at regional, good for 5th among qualifiers. The event begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

And Winnsboro’s Camden Capehart will try to defend his 100-meter dash title. His 10.65 is 5th, though the 10.47 he ran in the prelims is well ahead of the top time of 10.59. The event is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Thursday.

From Alba-Golden Wyatt Sutton will have two shots at a medal, in the 200-meter dash and as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team along with Cameron Lennon, Kayden Massie and Garrett Wright.

Sutton’s 22.53 regional time is 7th among the qualifiers while the relay’s 3:28.84 is 8th.

The 200 is at 7:55 p.m. Friday, May 2 and the relay follows at 8:45.

All events take place at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
