Two Quitman lifters place at state

After putting in over 800 miles and 16 hours of driving time, Quitman Lady Bulldog power lifters came home with a pair of top ten finishes in the state in their weight divisions.

Lifters turn in a total combined weight from three areas: squat, bench and dead lift.

Kaitlynn Barnett took seventh place in the 97-pound class with 540 pounds lifted in the three events, including 195 pounds in the squat, 100 pounds in the bench press and 245 pounds on the dead lift.

Barnett earned her state ticket by taking first place in the regional meet with a total of 520 pounds in her division.

Brooklyn Marcee placed ninth in the state in the 123-pound class with a total of 700 pounds, including 270 in the squat, 150 on the bench press and a dead lift of 280 pounds. She also lifted 700 pounds, taking first place at region.

Bailey Hughes was first at the regional meet with 835 pounds, but she did not get to finish lifting at state due to not completing a lift on the squat portion of the competition.

Coach Ryan Turney said, “I am so unbelievably proud of these girls and how far they have come. I can’t believe power lifting season is over now. We came back with a seventh place finisher and a ninth place finisher. Two girls who are one of the top 10 strongest in the entire state in their weight classes is quite an accomplishment. The other one competed well, but didn’t quite make it out of squat phase of the competition. Eight more months and we’ll get it all started again. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our program.”
