The Daisy Award is an honor given specifically to provide an ongoing recognition of clinical skills and, especially compassion, nurses provide to patients and families on a daily basis throughout the year.

UT Health Quitman honored one of its own last Wednesday at the hospital. Nurse Brandy Wilson was surprised to receive the honor.

Wilson was nominated by the grandmother and family of a young patient. In her nomination, the thankful grandmother wrote: “We brought our grandson to the ER because he was having a hard time breathing. Brandy was our nurse and she was amazing with him. My grandson is four years old and was a preemie, so he has had his share of hospitals. Brandy was so good to him. Brandy talked to him and explained everything she was doing, letting him see and touch the things she was doing. Brandy had to start an IV on him and he does not like sharp things (needles), but within seconds the IV was started. She loved and comforted him and was totally amazing. Brandy was a comfort to me (Grandma), mom and dad while we were there in the ER. He was transferred to Children’s later that night. At Children’s they had to start a second IV and it took two nurses and 40 minutes to start his IV. We needed Brandy! We were thankful for Brandy, our angel that day. “

Nurses are nominated by anyone in a hospital organization including patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff who experiences or observes extraordinary, compassionate care being provided by a nurse.
