Winnsboro spoils Quitman district record

The Quitman Bulldogs’ perfect district record was to be no more after taking a 60-49 loss at Winnsboro Friday night. The Bulldogs were coming off another close win, 45-40, over Mt. Vernon earlier in the week.

The Winnsboro loss dropped Quitman to a 3-1 record. They were scheduled to play at Mineola Tuesday before entertaining district leader Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill Friday.

The Bulldogs were not at full strength against the Red Raiders with Hunter Jacobs out with a strained quad muscle. He will probably miss the next two games.

The action-packed first quarter ended with the Bulldogs taking a 17-16 edge. Brady Floyd had nine of the Bulldogs’ 17 points. The Red Raiders took control in the second quarter, outscoring Quitman 14-5. Floyd scored all five as the Bulldogs fell behind 30-22 and never recovered.

Winnsboro’s hustle and defensive pressure were the keys to their victory. The Raiders led 44-37 at the end of the third period. The closest Quitman got to the Raiders was when Levi Thompson hit a triple to make the score 35-33.

Floyd led the Bulldogs with 21 points and consistently made plays to keep Quitman within striking distance. Landon Richey had another solid effort on both ends of the floor.

On Tuesday, Thompson’s 20 points led the Bulldogs in their 45-40 win over Mt. Vernon. After falling behind 4-0, Quitman’s Jacobs hit a triple. Thompson scored the next six points to give Quitman a 9-8 edge. Thomas Sabedra hit a bucket to put Quitman up 10-9, but a Tiger late basket made it 11-10 after one quarter.

The teams battled evenly the second quarter with neither team getting more than a three-point advantage leading to a Mt. Vernon 22-21 lead at intermission.

A big 16-8 run by the Bulldogs in the third quarter put them ahead 37-30 going into the final eight minutes. Mt. Vernon went on an early fourth quarter 6-1 run to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 38-36, but Thompson nailed a long triple giving Quitman a 41-36 lead.

With the score 42-40 Quitman, Thompson hit a pair of free throws to extend the Bulldog lead to 44-40. Floyd added a charity toss with five seconds left to give the Bulldogs the 45-40 win.
