Wood County citizens stream to polls on first day of early voting
Wood County voters swamped the civic center in Quitman Monday morning on the first day of early voting in the Nov. 5 general election. It continues through Nov. 1.
The election features the race for president between former president Donald Trump, the Republican, and Democrat Kamala Harris, who has served as vice president under President Joe Biden.
Texas also has a contested U.S. Senate race between two-term Republican incumbent Ted Cruz and Democratic Congressman Colin Allred.
Three-term GOP Congressman Lance Gooden, who represents Wood County, has a Democratic opponent, Ruth “Truth” Torres.
The only locally contested race is in Precinct Three between incumbent Republican County Commissioner Mike Simmons and Democrat Madeline Gibson.
Republican county officials who are unopposed include District Judge Brad McCampbell, Sheriff Kelly Cole, Precinct 3 Constable John McQueen and Precinct 4 Constable Chase Glover.
Also unopposed are Republicans Angie Luman to replace Carol Taylor as tax assessor-collector, Justin Bowring as the new Precinct 1 county commissioner, Robert Holland as new Precinct 1 constable and Bobby Tucker as new Precinct 2 constable.
Early voting days and hours are as follows at the Carroll Green Civic Center in Quitman:
Through Friday, Oct. 25, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 26, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 27, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 28 to Friday, Nov. 1, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Additionally early voting branch locations will be open Monday through Friday, Oct. 28-Nov. 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hawkins Community Center, 301 Lynch St.; Winnsboro City Auditorium, Hwy. 515 to Wheeler Dr.; and Mineola Civic Center, 1150 N. Newsom St.
