Yantis school board calls special election
Voters in the Yantis school district are being asked to approve a proposition Oct. 4 that will allow the district to continue business as normal as a state “recapture” district.
Under the state’s Robin Hood school finance plan, some districts deemed property wealthy send a part of their tax revenues to the state to help fund property poor districts.
Yantis is considered such a district and has been since 2009.
But a change in state law requires those districts to hold an election in order to continue doing basically what they have in past years.
Numerous districts have had these elections in recent years, resulting in continuation of business as usual.
If measure should fail, the district could face drastic measures, including consolidation with a neighboring district. It could also see part of its property annexed by a neighboring district for taxation purposes.
Approval of the measure would not affect the district’s property tax rate, which has already been proposed at 85.46 cents per $100 valuation. Although that is a drop from last year’s rate of 87.2 cents, the district expects to see a 7.22% increase in revenue thanks to property values which rose $130 million to $661 million.
Early voting is Sept. 19-23 and 26-27 at the Yantis ISD office, 111 S. Main St.
