The Mineola Yellowjackets used a strong defensive effort to defeat Quitman at Ballard Memorial Gym 56-42 Friday night.

A five point-second quarter by Quitman while Mineola was hitting six free throws and a pair of buckets gave the ‘Jackets a 26-16 lead at intermission.

Mineola streaked to an early 11-2 lead on a pair of three-pointers by Hunter Vandover and T.J. Moreland. Quitman fought back on two buckets by Brady Floyd and a triple by Jack Tannebaum to make it 13-9 with 2:30 left in the quarter. Mineola freshman Xavien Lipscomb hit a trey for Mineola and Levi Thompson scored for Quitman as the first quarter ended with Mineola leading 16-11.

Thompson started the second quarter with a score to make it 16-13, but Mineola came back to take a 25-13 lead on a bucket by Stephen Ogueri along with free throws by Lipscomb, Vandover and Moreland. The Bulldogs’ Ford Tannebaum hit a three making it 25-16 and a Moreland free throw left the score 26-16.

The ‘Jackets increased their lead in the third quarter. A triple by Moreland made it 31-16 early in the third quarter. The ‘Jackets continued with buckets from Dawson Pendergass, Brayden Alley and Moreland expanding the Mineola lead to 41-22. Quitman’s Thomas hit a pair of free throws near the end of the quarter, but the ‘Jackets still led 41-24 going into the final quarter.

Thompson caught fire scoring 12 of the Bulldog’s 18 points, but it was not able to offset the ‘Jackets consistent play on both ends of the court. Midway through the final quarter,  Vandover hit a triple with 4:20 left in giving Mineola their biggest lead of the night 53-32.

The Bulldogs continued to fight, but the ‘Jackets answered each Quitman run. With Mineola leading 56-36, Thompson hit six more points leaving the final score 56-42.

Moreland led the ‘Jackets with 17 points followed by Lipscomb’s 11 and Vandover with 10. Thompson led Quitman with 17 points.

Last Tuesday, Quitman lost another close battle with Mt. Vernon 46-43. In a Saturday makeup game, Mineola defeated Winona 73-37.

The wins kept the ‘Jackets at the top of District 13-3A with a 5-1 record and Quitman fell to 2-4 in district play.
