Yellowjackets win baseball opener, face stiff competition in Paris Chisum tournament

Mineola opened the 2021 baseball season with a 21-3 victory over Cooper last Tuesday.

The Jackets broke on top with five runs in the first and led 12-1 after two. Eight more in the fifth finished off the offensive night, which included 16 hits.

Spencer Joyner worked three innings, striking out five. Kaden Bell threw the last two frames with three strikeouts.

Bell recorded three hits while Cason Davis and Thomas Hooton each had a pair. Joyner drove in three runs and Davis and Hooton two apiece. Davis and Riley Fowler each drew a pair of walks.

In the Paris Chisum tournament, Hughes Springs blanked the Yellowjackets on a no-hitter, 7-0.

Davis drew two walks. He also pitched three innings and struck out three.

Jacob Castleberry threw an inning and a third with a strike out.

Hughes Springs grabbed the lead with two runs in the first and added a run in the second with two each in the third and fourth, aided by 12 hits and four Mineola errors.

Against Hooks, Mineola lost 11-2. The ‘Jackest had one run each in the 1st and 4th. Hooks got six in the 2nd and four in the 4th.

Jack Heard threw three and two thirds and struck out two.

Mineola squared off with Paris Chisum twice. The first resulted in a 7-7- tie.

Mineola had five hits to seven for Chisum.

Hooton had three RBI and Riley Fowler two.

Bell threw three innings with one strike out.

Mineola took the second matchup 12-1 with 15 hits.

The ‘Jackets did all their damage in three at bats with two runs in the first followed by five each in the second and third.

Chisum’s run came in the 3rd.

Fowler recorded three hits and Caleb Gant and Davis two each.

Joyner pitched four innings and fanned six. He also drove in four runs.
