A number of Mineola Middle School students earned All-Regional Honors in band during auditions on Nov. 30 at Union Grove High School. These students auditioned in front of five judges and were selected to perform in this elite group. More than 20 schools sent students to the competition. Mineola Middle School was fortunate to take 19 spots in the 100-piece band that will perform a concert in Longview on Jan. 26. The students were recognized at the Mineola Band Christmas Concert on Dec. 5. more
Quitman high school athletics is utilizing off-season time to teach kids the importance of community service. Quitman ISD Athletic Director Bryan Oakes said the athletic department has established groups within the off-season program to promote competition, including in the realm of community service. more
Wood County Electric Cooperative (WCEC) is pleased to announce the 2018 Power Upward Scholarship contest winners. This program is for non-traditional adult learners pursuing post-secondary education. Each of the three winners described their field of study and future goals with an essay. The winners, selected by an independent judge, are: Mary Elizabeth Hunt, Winnsboro; Melissa Coats, Quitman; and Brandi Putman, Winnsboro. more
Wood County 4-H held its annual 4-H Food Show on Monday, Nov. 26 for members who have been participating in the Food/Nutrition project. At the Food Show, the 4-H’ers were judged in an interview setting on the food they had prepared and the members knowledge of its nutritional value, food safety, and the MyPlate recommendations. more
Trustees of the Alba-Golden Independent School District reconstituted the school board with the swearing in of Trustee Johnny Teel at the Dec. 10 regular meeting. Teel had stepped aside from the board while a nepotism resolution regarding the employment of his wife was pending. In Teel’s absence, Nick Kerry filled the seat. Kerry offered his resignation letter at the meeting. more
