FFA student Madison Haney from Hawkins captured Champion Junior Heifer Calf with Made Marleigh in the Junior Shorthorn Heifer Show at the 2019 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Jan. 26. The 2019 show is hosting junior breeding beef exhibitors from across Texas competing for awards and $36,210 in premiums. Of the 33,000 entries at the nation’s longest-running livestock show, the livestock exhibited by the more than 11,500 junior exhibitors are among the best market animals in the country. While the livestock are impressive, one of the Show’s main objectives is to support the professional and leadership development efforts offered by the 4-H and FFA programs in Texas. [more] more
Carlee Vavra, a member of Yantis FFA, caught a calf during the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Calf Scramble on Jan. 26, earning a $500 purchase certificate for a show heifer and the chance for up to $12,500 in scholarship awards. more
For one Quitman Elementary student, a new mobile desk and chair was one of the best presents he could have ever received. Fourth-grader Angel Cortez was born with no arms and was in need of a smaller, mobile chair when switching classes throughout the day.  QES Assistant Principal Lance Morrow and maintenance worker Chris Williams found spare wooden parts, a rolling cart and cushioned office chair to put together Angel’s new desk. In a few days, Williams constructed a seat for Angel to move to his classrooms more easily. [read more] more

Megan Holt, a member of the Mineola High School Band, will perform with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. more
Mineola High School’s Business Professionals of America Parliamentary Procedure Team won first place at regional competition earlier in January and advances to State competition. more
The Mineola school board recently prioritized a list of requests that will be submitted to the Meredith Foundation for possible funding in 2019. At the top of the list is $30,000 in scholarships for graduating seniors. Scholarships are always at the top of the list for requests since this funding goes directly to students, according to Supt. Kim Tunnell, who noted that Meredith has increased the amount of scholarships over the years.  more
