A tradition of donuts

In keeping with the tradition of National Donut Day, on Friday, June 2, Beth and Roy Shockey of Mineola’s Salvation Army Service Unit delivered donuts to Mineola Police Dept., Mineola Fire Dept. and city of Mineola offices (above) to recognize them for their service to citizens and community. National Donut Day was created by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to help those in need from the Great Depression and dated to 1917 during World War One when “Donut Lassies” cooked fresh donuts for American troops on the front lines.
