Bassmaster tournament, family festival to showcase Caney Point improvements

Preparations are ramping up for two major events to be held in concert at Caney Point Recreational Area on Lake Fork.

Crews were busy late last week on expanding parking and installing a permanent sign to the park which is just north of the bridge on Hwy. 154 between Quitman and Yantis, on the west side of the highway.

The Bassmasters Elite Tournament runs Feb. 29-March 3, and the final two days will include the Lake Fork Family Fest.

The event is a collaboration of the Sabine River Authority, which operates the lake, the Wood County Economic Development Commission and the Quitman Pilot Club, which is this year’s festival sponsor.

Caney Point will serve as the host venue for the first time.

While the top anglers from around the nation will descend on the lake which is always ranked among the best for bass fishing, the festival will offer plenty of family activities over the weekend which will showcase the major improvements to the recreation area, which includes a beautiful pavilion situated on a picturesque point.

Neal McCoy will headline the event on Sunday, while Saturday will feature the music of Alba native Eric George.

Tyler Brown of Fusion in the Woods will give a cooking demonstration on Saturday.

A corn hole tournament kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Pickleball tournaments are scheduled both days.

All registration information and other details may be found at the lovewoodcounty.com website.

The Creature Teacher, catfish tank, vendors, food trucks and a coffee garden will be available.

The fishermen take off each morning at 7 a.m. with weigh-in at 3 p.m.

The Bassmasters event was last held on Lake Fork in 2022 with events at the SRA headquarters east of the dam.

The family festival is planned to be an annual event, with a crappie fishing tournament planned during years when the lake is not on the Bassmasters schedule.
