Benefit set for Dubbs Saturday

The Mineola community is coming together to give back to one of its own who has given so much to the community for over 35 years.

Wanda Dubbs, who has set a high bar for volunteerism, has been diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor (non-malignant), and friends are planning an event to assist with the family’s medical expenses.

Dubbs has been on the forefront of planning for the numerous events surrounding the city’s sesquicentennial celebration this year.

She could be seen making the rounds at the recent Sabine Stomp concert at the Mineola Nature Preserve Sept. 2 and has been heading up the planning for the year-end gala on Dec. 9 to wrap up the historic year.

She has parceled out the assignments to help ensure the event goes off without a hitch and has proclaimed that she will be back to attend the event.

On Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m., the First Methodist Church Ministry Center will host the benefit.

There will be homemade desserts with coffee and tea, giveaways, silent auction baskets and other items, music by John Fox and keynote speakers Mercy Rushing, who will speak on community volunteerism, and friend Mark Chamblee whose talk is entitled “Life is not always a bed of roses.”

Over the years Dubbs has volunteered with the city, Lake Country Playhouse, chamber of commerce, Mineola Nature Preserve, Iron Horse Square Park, Mineola Historical Museum, Mineola schools and the Methodist Church. She serves on the Mineola Main Street and Mineola Civic Center boards of directors.
