Candidates lined up before the filing deadline Friday for local offices, with a contested race for a Mineola City Council position and a contested mayor’s race in Quitman.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, candidates for three Mineola offices – mayor, Ward 2 alderman and Ward 3 alderman were uncontested. Those who had filed for those offices are Kevin White for mayor, Jack Newman for Ward 2 alderman and Mitchell Tuck for Ward 3. However, last week Tom Mann filed for Ward 1 alderman and was followed by Polly Jones, current Ward 1 alderperson, filing for reelection.

In Quitman, Mayor J.R. Evans is being challenged by David Dobbs. Three people are seeking two at-large council seats. They are Randy Dunn, Brad Medlin and Toni Cole.

On the Mineola School Board, incumbents Dr. Kyle Gully and Dr. John Abbott have filed for reelection and are unopposed.

On the Quitman School Board, Jane Herring’s and Trey Teaff’s seats up for election. Teaff is not seeking reelection while Herring is. Raymond Peek and Mark Breding are also running for one of the two seats.

In Alba, Mayor Ted Levitt is seeking reelection and is opposed by Preston “Sonny” Hass. Two seats are up on the council, one for which Larry Jones is seeking reelection. Also seeking one of the two seats are Marja Heinnert and Larry Harris, Jr.

The Alba-Golden School Board has three seats up for election – those currently held by Ed Teel, Jason Stovall and Joey Hooton. Teel does not plan to seek reelection. Stovall filed for reelection and Johnny Teel had filed. An update on final filings for A-GISD was not available by Monitor presstime due to the Presidents Day holiday.

The city of Yantis will not have to hold an election. Mayor Jerry Miller and councilmen John Norris III and Bruce Sumner are unopposed. Miller will serve his eighth term.

However, on the Yantis School Board, there are five candidates for two terms that are open. The candidates are Shannon Hall, Mike Allen, Jennifer McKeever, Melissa Stephens and Kay Glenn. There are three candidates for an unexpired term. They are Joey Bush, Tyra Gilbreath Kenemore and April Johnson.
