Council reverses course on 1-way school zone
way school zone ordinance near Quitman Elementary School approved by the city council last month was reversed by the council on Thursday.
Mayor Randy Dunn explained that the change impacted a bus having to go the wrong way to pick up a student.
So the one-way street along Paul St. will begin at Hill St., north to Goode St., rather than at Lance which had been approved previously.
Dunn said police will patrol the area to try to prevent parents picking up students from cutting in from side streets.
It is in effect from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-4 p.m.
The council also approved an amendment to the handicap parking ordinance.
Three spaces are designated as handicapped spots on the west side of the courthouse, but the city ordinance did not reflect the increased minimum fine, which is now $500 to $1,000.
City attorney Jim McLeroy recommended a review of the fine schedule with new city judge Cass Calloway, who was sworn in Thursday.
McLeroy also recommended tabling an amendment to the city’s employee retirement benefits through the Texas Municipal Retirement System.
More information is needed concerning the long term impact of an option offered by TMRS concerning cost of living increases.
The council approved the appointment of the Quitman Development Corp. members.
Terms ending Sept. 30, 2024, Kevan Burroughs, Brad Medlin, David Hobbs. Terms ending Sept. 30, 2025, Martha Scroggins, Greg Eberhart, Alice Bower, Pam Bowdoin. Also approved was appointment of James Attaway as executive director.
Scroggins announced that the QDC has closed on Lot 4 in the business park with John and Joanne Wisdom for the construction of a medical office.
Dunn recognized employee Drew Russell for 15 years of service to the city.
