The Wood County Historical Commission has been honored by the Texas Historical Commission with its annual Distinguished Service Award.
The award will be formally presented during the county commissioners meeting on Friday morning at the Wood County courthouse in Quitman.
The award signifies the local county commission’s documented efforts to offer “ongoing, well-rounded programs and history and preservation-related projects that enrich local communities,” according to the state commission.
Counties that go above and beyond to protect and promote local historic and cultural resources are honored by THC each year.
County commissioners are responsible for appointing local county commissions in Texas, and the more than 200 commissions in Texas provided more than 447,000 volunteer hours to the state last year.
The county commission also earned the distinguished designation last year.
