County switches drug providers
Wood County commissioners agreed to switch pharmacy benefit providers for county employee health insurance.
The move offered a potential savings of $260,000 per year.
County Judge Kevin White said the county sought proposals after Rite Aid Pharmacy declared bankruptcy and problems with provider Elixir.
The county reviewed four proposals and decided to go with Magellan.
The review of the four providers for the period October 2022 to September 2023 showed the county would have saved $260,000 had Magellan been the provider.
It was noted that those savings are not guaranteed but are based on historical data.
The review also looked at formulary drugs and noted no difference on copays and minimal disruption in switching drugs.
The four also provided similar networks including chain and local pharmacies.
Commissioners opted to make the change beginning March 1 and agreed to a three-year contract with a 90-day opt out clause.
