East Texas Serenaders tribute planned for marker unveiling

The Mineola Landmark Commission is wrapping up its collection of items to go into the time capsule that will be replaced in the old post office which now houses the Mineola Historical Museum.

It was removed last year during the city’s sesquicentennial, 87 years after it was placed into the new post office’s cornerstone in 1936.

It will be replaced in a ceremony Monday, Sept. 9 to kick off a celebration of the museum’s 15th anniversary.

At its meeting last week, directors decided to cancel the Hobo Special on the Friday before the Iron Horse Heritage Festival in September. They will consider an alternative fundraising event in 2025.

Upon learning that a California music group will be performing at the Select Theater in Mineola Oct. 22 featuring the music of the East Texas Serenaders, the commission decided to try to coordinate the unveiling of an historical marker about the Serenaders in downtown Mineola with the group’s performance.

Elise Engleberg, who plays fiddle in the band Skillet Licorice, said they will be making several stops in Texas ahead if the centennial of the group’s first recording in 1927.

Members of the Serenaders hailed from in and around the Mineola area and largely limited their appearances to the region.

They are credited with helping to shepherd the musical genre of swing music.
