A Hawkins High School student was killed in a traffic crash Saturday afternoon, June 3.

According to the preliminary report from the Texas Dept. of Public Safety, Jaykob A. Dodd, 16, was traveling south on FM 14 at Private Road 7816 one mile north of Hawkins in a 2001 Ford Ranger at 12:55 p.m.

Sabino Santoy, 65, of Ore City was traveling north in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

Dodd’s vehicle drifted across the center line and struck Santoy’s vehicle head on, according to the report.

Dodd was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Jody Hettich.

Santoy and a passenger, Maria Santoy, 63, of Ore City were transported to UT Health Hospital in Tyler, he with incapacitating injuries and she with non-incapacitating injuries.

All three were wearing seat belts. The weather was clear and the road was dry.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Corey VanDerWilt with DPS Quitman. The investigation is ongoing.
