Jackets open baseball season
It was a perfect week for tournament play and local teams took advantage. The Mineola Yellowjackets were busy at Grand Saline while the Lady Jackets were in Elysian Fields. The Panthers of Alba-Golden participated at Chisum and the Lady Panthers in the TASO Tourney in Tyler. The Quitman Bulldogs were at the Rains Tourney and the Lady Bulldogs participated in the Lone Star Tournament. Tournament ball gives teams a chance to build significant experience in a short span of time and exposes a team to a wide array of game-time situations. One of those is the crowd favorite ‘play at the plate.’ Here Yellowjacket catcher Matthew Ballew reaches to apply a tag on an Arp baserunner in Mineola’s final game of the Grand Saline tourney. The call went in favor of Arp – as did the game – but the experience will serve the team well.
