Judge approved to negotiate opioid settlement

Following a closed session last Tuesday, Wood County commissioners appointed County Judge Kevin White to negotiate on behalf of the county in the ongoing opioid litigation.

That case, involving numerous Texas counties and drug companies, has been contested since 2018 in Harris County.

Commissioners approved the annual agreement with the city of Quitman to provide mowing at the water treatment lagoons and some water and sewer rights-of-way.

Personnel matters acknowledged included a pay raise for auto deputies Holly Williams and Brittany Schneider and tax deputy Melinda Call in the tax assessor-collector’s office and a change from cook to jailer for Scot Dierks in the sheriff’s department.

Virgil Holland Jr. and Debra Holland were reappointed to the East Texas Housing Finance Corp. for six-year terms.

A proclamation was made for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Logging permits were approved for roads in Precincts 1 and 3.

Public hearings were set for three lot changes in Holly Lake Ranch.

Commissioners heard two public comments concerning a request to declare Wood County as a constitutional county.
