Kid Trout Fishing coming to preserve

Posted

Mineola Nature Preserve will be hosting a Kids’ Trout Fishing Day on Feb. 8, 9 a.m.-noon at Bridge Bob Pond.

Texas Parks & Wildlife will stock the pond with 1,250 rainbow trout to give area youth and adult fishing mentors this free fishing opportunity.

No fishing license is required. A light-action rod and reel combo with small fishing hooks, light line (12 lb. test or less), small bobbers and small split shot is a good starter kit.

Salmon eggs, whole kernel corn, marshmallows, small worms or prepared trout baits are great bait options, as well as small artificial baits such as rooster-tails, Berkley power bait and small spinners.

To keep the five allowable trout per person for the day, bring a stringer or small cooler.

Local volunteers and TPWD will be available to help with fishing and to provide loaner equipment if needed.

The event is sponsored by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, City of Mineola, local merchants, civic organizations and many individual contributors.
