Lady Bulldogs fall to Lone Oak to start district
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs lost their District 12-3A opener on the road at Lone Oak 53-36 last Tuesday. The 9-2 Lady Buffalos are one of the teams expected to challenge Mineola and Edgewood for the district crown.
Quitman Head Coach Blake Hamrick was proud of his team. “We played a hard competitive game. The girls competed well, were very coachable, and made it a game,” Hamrick said.
The game was contested closer than the final score indicates. The Lady Bulldogs dominated on the boards hauling down 26 rebounds to just six for Lone Oak.
The game was close at intermission with Lone Oak leading 24-17. The third quarter was decisive as Lone Oak went on a 15-6 run with the help of a few questionable calls from the officials.
Going into the final quarter Lone Oak led 39-23. The Lady Bulldogs put forth a valiant fourth quarter effort, but the Lady Buffs prevailed to go 1-0 in district action.
Maddy Whitehurst led Quitman with 11 points with Ava Burroughs adding 10 points and 11 rebounds. Other scoring for Quitman came from Julia Simpkins and Madison Pence with five points each, Shelby Hayes three and with one each Reiny Luman and Kynlie Love, who also had five rebounds.
Quitman will get in one more tournament over the holidays going to Hawkins Dec. 26, 27 and 28.
