Lady Bulldogs ousted in first round of softball playoffs

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs ended their season last week dropping a pair of games in the bi-district playoff round to the Queen City Bulldogs.

The best-of-3 series opened Tuesday, April 24 in Quitman with Kennedi Elmore on the mound. Queen City got on the scoreboard first during the second inning after Laurel Moore was hit by a pitch and scored an error by catcher Larkin Spears. The top of the third inning began with a bang as Queen City’s first two batters, Serinity Oden and Trinity Oden, hit homeruns over the centerfield fence to lead 3-0.

Quitman struggled at the plate all night with Chloe Jones and Kennedi Elmore earning singles in the second and fourth innings, respectively. The Lady Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Spears and Kori Hammond reached base on singles. Allie Berry hit a sacrifice to the pitcher that scored Spears. Quitman ended the inning trailing 3-1. Queen City went on to score another run in the sixth when Jones made an error.

Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Quitman made a last attempt at a comeback. Looking for redemption at the plate, Jones hit a pop fly to shortstop for a single to start off the inning. Spears hit a fielder’s choice to shortstop. Spears advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball while Hammond was at the plate. Unfortunately, the game ended when Hammond went down swinging and the Bulldogs lost 4-2.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Queen City the next day. Even though Elmore managed to strike out nine batters, Quitman was never able to get things going at the plate and struggled on the field, piling up seven errors. Ashley Davis and Elmore each had a hit, and Spears managed two hits. However, the hits were too few and far between and the Lady Bulldogs ended their season with a 4-0 loss.
