Lady Bulldogs split district contests
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs put up a valiant effort against Mt. Vernon Saturday at Ballard Memorial Gym Saturday.
Although they fell in three sets, the Quitman ladies gave the Lady Tigers all they could handle.
Mt. Vernon took an early lead and held on to give them a first set win of 25-13. The Lady Bulldogs had their opportunities in the second and third sets, but Mt. Vernon came away with close wins, 25-23, 25-22.
For Quitman, Ava Burroughs had nine kills, one ace, 10 digs, one block; Carley Spears had 22 assists, three kills, three digs and a block assist; Brooklyn Marcee had six kills, an ace and four digs; Maddy Pence had four kills, one dig and one block; Addison Marcee had six digs; Alexis O’Neal one ace and 11 digs; Ashley Davis with four digs and a kill; Kaysi Parker one dig; and Addison Marcee five digs
Earlier in the week, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill in three tough sets by scores of 29-27, 25-10 and 27-25.
Burroughs had a fine all-around game with 14 digs, 15 kills, one block and three block assists. Spears also had a good effort with 29 assists, five digs, three kills, one ace and three block assists. Kaysi Parked played well with three kills, a block and two block assists. Libero Alexis O’Neal had 11 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs are 2-1 in district and 13-11 on the year. After facing Winona on Tuesday, they travel to Harmony Friday.
Harmony is 21-1 and ranked third in the state Class 3A rankings by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
At Harmony, the Lady Bulldogs will face the Lady Eagles at 4:30 p.m. prior to the Quitman football game, also at Harmony at 7:30 p.m.
