Lady Panthers exit playoffs in area round

Things started well enough for the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers in their second game of the area  softball championship series against the Crossroads Bobcats Friday in Tyler.

Leadoff hitter Kendra Jones smacked a ball to the fence in right-center and rounded the bases, easily beating the offline throw to the plate.

It was 1-0 Alba-Golden.

By the end of the evening, the Lady Panthers had been eliminated from the state softball playoffs 8-1, in two games. They fell 6-2 in the first game last Wednesday.

By the end of the game, Jones was not on the field, being treated for an injury.

In the fourth inning, a soft pop foul off the catcher’s left shoulder stayed in play, and she lunged to make the catch.

She took a few minutes to return to the game and played one more inning before leaving to seek treatment.

Crossroads responded to Alba-Golden’s only lead immediately in the bottom of the first with a two-out single and a double to left field to take a 2-1 lead.

Alba-Golden managed a base runner in the second when Alexis Wilmut was hit by a pitch.

Crossroads added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings while the Lady Panthers were going down in order, giving the Crossroads infield plenty of work on ground outs and pop outs.

Alyssa Murdock reached on an error to open the sixth but was stranded on a strike out and two ground outs.

Crossroads extended the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, again with all the damage coming with two outs on a bases load walk and a 2-RBI double.

Alba-Golden finally got something going in the 7th as Megan Wallace walked to lead off and Adielyn Smith singled. Kalli Trimble fanned but Wilmut placed one just out of reach of the shortstop to load the bases. The threat, and the game and season, ended with a strike out and soft liner to second base.
