Lady Panthers get district opening win

Posted

Call it nerves. The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers overcame a shaky start to take the visiting Boles Lady Hornets in a straight-set win last Friday.

In that first set, which the Lady Panthers won 25-22, the home side gave Boles 15 points on mis-hits, service errors and net violations.

Boles scored only five points through their own offense.

Yet the Lady Panthers weathered the odd start. With the set tied at 20, three kills by Bailee Bishop and Alexis Wilmut secured the first set win.

With those first-set jitters behind them, the Lady Panthers went to work in the second set.

Great scrambling by Lainey Teel, solid play at the net and scoring strikes by Wilmut and Hailey Crutchfield built a 10-point margin.

Teel had one passage of play with two blocks in the same point. Alba-Golden took the second set 25-10.

The Lady Panthers overcame a brief spurt of activity by the Lady Hornets, and by mid-set they were in charge of set three.

Two long service turns – one by Teel and one by Kalli Trimble – guided the Lady Panthers through to their first match win of the district campaign.

Commencing Friday, the Lady Panthers embark on a five-match road trip at Cumby, North Hopkins, Fruitvale, Boles and Como-Pickton. The next chance to see them in action at home will be Tuesday, Oct. 17.
