A-G girls rout Kemp
With their ever-present full-court press setting the pace, the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers racked up their fourth consecutive district 12-3A victory and remained atop the heap just past the midway point in the first round of conference play by walloping the Kemp Lady Jackets, 60-29, last Tuesday night in Alba. The victory sets the standard in the league competition at 4-0 as the home team elevated its season record to 16-8, more wins than many teams have even played this season.
From the opening tipoff, the pressure of the Lady Panther defense took its toll on the Lady Jackets as Alba-Golden eased out to an incredible 21-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Kemp didn’t get its first field goal of the game until 5:08 in the second quarter when Alyssa Fisher hit a three-pointer. And that bucket was, in fact, the only field goal the Lady Yellowjackets recorded in the first half as the Lady Panthers waltzed to a 35-9 halftime advantage.
Shelby Wright scorched the nets for 22 points, 15 of them in the first half, to lead all Lady Panther scorers. Gracie Pendergrass swished in 12 and Grace Bizzell popped in 10 to join her in the double figure club for Alba-Golden. A total seven Lady Panthers cracked the scoring column in a well-rounded performance for coach Blake Hamrick’s squad.
The biggest problem Alba-Golden had was making shots at the free-throw line, hitting just 50 percent of their charity shots in making 17 of 34. Kemp did even worse in making just eight of 17 free tosses, just 47 percent.
“We played pretty well,” Hamrick said of his Lady Panthers, but qualified his comment by adding, “but we need to cut down on those turnovers. That is going to come back and hurts one of these days if we don’t get them under control.”
The victory put the Lady Panthers on a three-game win streak and marked their seventh victory in their last nine starts.
The Lady Panthers (16-8, 4-0) visited Quitman Friday night, and hosted Scurry-Rosser Tuesday night, after Monitor press time, and travel to Grand Saline this Friday to close out the first half of the District 12-3A schedule.
