March primary filing deadline Monday

The filing deadline is Monday for places on the ballot in the March 5 party primaries in Texas.

Former District Judge Jeff Fletcher has tossed his name into the hat for state representative in District 5.

The incumbent Republican, Cole Hefner of Mt. Pleasant, has filed for reelection. Dewey Collier of Talco, who ran against Hefner two years ago, has filed to seek the house seat again.

Fletcher, who has a law practice in Mineola, served as judge of the 402nd District Court from 2016-2020.

He lost his reelection bid to Brad McCampbell, who is seeking reelection.

At the county level for the Republican primary, two persons have filed for constable in Precinct One, LaDawn Foley-McGee and Robert Holland.

For Prec. 2 constable, Joshua Davis, Bobby Tucker and Stephen Nichols have filed.

Incumbent John McQueen has filed for Prec. 3.

No candidates had filed for Prec. 4 constable as of Tuesday.

For county commissioner, incumbent Virgil Jr. Holland has drawn Justin Bowring as an opponent for Prec. 1, and Prec. 3 commissioner Mike Simmons has David Eishen as an opponent.

Sheriff Kelly Cole has field for reelection.

County tax assessor-collector is also on the ballot in 2024.

U.S. Congressman Lance Gooden has filed for reelection representing District 5.

Wood County Democratic Party Chairman Judy Traylor said the party will be announcing one candidate at the county level next week.

Persons seeking a place on the ballot should contact Traylor at 903-312-3315 or Republican Party Chairman Kathy Wakeman at 903-714-3048 by 6 p.m. on Monday.

Traylor will be at the Speakeasy Coffe House in Quitman Monday from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.

Wakeman will be at 706A E. Goode in Quitman except during the midday meeting of the Republican Women of Wood County.
