Marchman garden club begins fall activities
The May meeting ended the 2023-24 fiscal year for the Fannie Marchman Garden Club, with the installation of new officers for 2024-25: President Kim Hughes, 1st VP Jana Cook (membership), 2nd VP Meleena Byram (programs), Treasurer Angela Thompson and Secretary Michelle Basham.
The 2nd annual garden tour in June was a huge success, with five homeowners who shared their gardens with the many visitors.
Members met during the summer months, with a field trip to Dreams of Green nursery in Flint. In July, to avoid some of the heat, members gathered in Mineola for an out on the town fun day. Visits included the Historical Museum, shopping, lunch, an afternoon movie and a group visit to the new garden sharing station on the north side of the museum. Items of gardening interest, books, magazines, seeds, implements etc., donated by the members, are available free, for the enjoyment of the public.
The club met at the Mineola Civic Center in August and enjoyed a presentation on bats by Boyd Sanders of Texas Parks and Wildlife.
In September the club shared a meeting with the Quitman Garden Club, renewing friendships, and enjoyed a box lunch.
The club will take a field trip to the Tyler Rose Garden in October, followed by a visit to the Rose Museum. November will be a community service project. In the New Year member and Master Gardner Victoria Settle will conduct the program “Trees – Stop, Look, Listen & Enjoy” in January. In February, Julie Mattox will present a program on purple martins. A plant swap will be held at the Mineola Nature Preserve pavilion in March. A field trip is planned in April to tour the J. Berry Greenhouse in Grand Saline, with lunch following. In May is installation of officers. Plans for summer activities include a field trip to tour the Ann Irby Gardens at Holly Lake Ranch. In July will be a presentation on native milkweed by Diana Black, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas, and August will be a program on Herbs 101, from member and Master Gardener Angela Thompson.
Unless otherwise stated, meetings are at the Mineola Civic Center the third Wednesday of the month, at 9:30 for meet and greet, with programs and meeting starting at 10 a.m. Visitors are very welcome. Follow us on Facebook or email, FannieMarchmanGardenClub@gmail.com.
