McFarland Bears honored with special day in Mineola
Three McFarland Bears, who starred for the football team at Mineola’s black high school in the 1960s, were honored by the city council Monday.
Nov. 27 was proclaimed McFarland Bears Athletes Day, and all former Bears were recognized following the proclamation which was read by council member Cassandra Samson, whose late father was among the honorees.
Alfred Tennyson, the late Marvin “Duckey” Sampson and Joe Tave were inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame earlier this year.
The three plaques presented at the hall of fame ceremony were brought to display.
The former school is still in use as a community center on S. Stone St.
