Moisture and heavy chill are among baseball's worst enemies. They combine to limit practice, and if you are Quitman, facing the opening of baseball season tomorrow, Feb. 20, it can leave more questions than answers.

His Bulldogs were leaving the parking lot at the ballpark last week and Head Coach Hayland Hardy looked over the grass infield.

"We've only had four practices because of the weather," he said matterof factly. He knows others re in the same situation but for this year's team, practice is critical. The baseball team is very thin in the experience area.

They have two starting pitchers, a catcher and two infielders that have solid playing time in their history.

The coach said senior pitchers Jesus "Chuy" Ramirez and Cord Conley join sophomore catcher Pancho Ramirez, sophomore Chase Turner and senior thirdbaseman Colby Peek as almost certain starters at those positions.

Ready or not they open the season tomorrow, Thursday,witha9a.m. game in the Harmony Tournament against Tatum.

The coach estimates the team "probably lost 250 hits from last season's team."

His early assesment is that the team has "good pitching" but they are "so far behind because of the weather," they are forced into a situation where they "just have to play and get better."

Quitman's first home appearance will be in the March 6, 7 and 8 F.C.A. Tournament and then they will host Alba-Golden

March 11 before going to one of the area's traditional baseball powerhouses, Grand Saline, March 14.

The remainder of the March schedule will include Edgewood at Quitman the 18th, and Lone Oak at Quitman the 21st, then a trip to Como-Pickton the 25th and back home against Commerce the 28th.

In April the Bulldogs visit Winnsboro on the 1st and Alba-Golden on the 4th before hosting Grand Saline the 8th. They then go to Edgewood on the 11th and Lone Oak on the 15th before closing out the season by playing two of three at home. Quitman will host Como-Pickton the 17th, visit Commerce the 22nd and end the regular season hosting Winnsboro the 25th.
