The Mineola Yellowjackets improved to 3-0 in district play last week after come-from-behind wins over Scurry-Rosser and Edgewood.

The Jackets’ flare for the dramatic has not gone unnoticed in their three district wins. Mineola has edged the competition by a combined 11 points including a half court buzzer beater against Kemp and a two-point victory in overtime against Scurry-Rosser.

The Yellowjackets defeated Edgewood Friday by a score of 49-43. Mineola jumped out to a quick 12-7 lead in the first period fueled by an 8-2 run that included six points by senior Frankie Meason, who finished with 14 points and three rebounds before fouling out of the game in the second half.

Mineola pushed their lead to nine points early in the second period before Edgewood countered with their own 7-0 run that would pull the Bulldogs within three points and eventually a one-point deficit at halftime.

Mineola and Edgewood exchanged lead changes in the third period but the Bulldogs would take a 33-32 lead into the final frame. The Yellowjackets clamped down in the fourth period and outscored the Bulldogs 17-10 taking the win and first place in District 12-3A.

Shaw Franklin recorded a double-double for Mineola with 13 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and two assists. Cameron Sorenson had six points, four rebounds, a steal and an assist and Shawn Dennis had five points, 10 rebounds and a steal.

KD George had four points, Kourtland Sinches and Cameron Hays had three points each and Eli Dabbs had a point to round out the Mineola scoring.

In last Tuesday’s game against Scurry-Rosser, the Jackets came out cold and trailed 12-3 after the first period before warming back up in the second period outscoring the Wildcats by two and trailing by seven points at halftime.

Mineola continued their strong play in the second half outscoring Scurry-Rosser 24-17 and rallying to tie the game at the end of regulation. The Yellowjackets went to work quickly and came away with a 9-7 edge in overtime and the 50-48 victory.

Sorenson led the way for Mineola with 13 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Joining Sorenson in double-figures was Sinches with 12 points, three rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Dennis had seven points, seven rebounds, a steal and an assist before fouling out and George had six points and five rebounds. Meason added four points, two steals and a rebound and Ford, Franklin, Hays and Dabbs each had two points.

The Yellowjackets (11-5, 3-0) traveled to Eustace Tuesday, after Monitor press time, and host Quitman (11-9, 2-1) in a rivalry game Friday.
