Mineola

The “Trunk or Treat” Halloween Block Party this year will be on Commerce Street. The public is invited to take a car, truck, van “or anything that goes” to Commerce Street and park it facing out to the middle of the street and open it up. Decorate tailgates, trunks, hatchbacks, etc. and then fill them with candy, toys, trinkets or prizes for trick or treaters.

The fun doesn’t stop there as the museum board is opening the building’s doors as a fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. for Nightmare at the Museum. Members of the Mineola League of the Arts will do face painting. A professional photo booth will be stationed in the midst of it all and visitors can purchase a strip of color photos for only $2 per person with no charge for infants or pets. The Wood County Paranormal Society has surveyed the building for any other-world presences and will show a video of their findings as well as exhibit the equipment they use.

A free kid’s movie, Casper’s Halloween Special, will be shown at Peterson Park at 6:30 and 7 p.m. following Trunk or Treat. The event is free to the public and the Mineola Landmark Commission is seeking sponsors for the event in order to raise funds for the Mineola Railroad Heritage Park.

“The commission is seeking sponsorship for the series to help raise money to establish a historical railroad park near the depot,” commission member Joyce Williams said. “We anticipate over 100 children and their parents to attend the movie after the downtown ‘Trunk or Treat’ activities.”

There will be an album release party at the Rafael Espinoza School of Music for Espinoza’s most recent release, Texas Matador.

There will be a special midnight screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” Saturday at the Lake Country Playhouse. The film is rated R so no one under the age of 17 will be admitted without an adult. Admission is $15 and doors open at 11:15 p.m.

The 24th annual Warehouse of Terror will be open 7:30-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday as well as Halloween night. The warehouse is located behind Kindness Kottage off Highway 80 and admission is $15. There are two separate discounts for admission: a $5 off Friday night game special with ticket-stub and a $2 discount for a donation of two canned food items, discounts cannot be combined.

Quitman

Get your masks, brooms, pumpkins, pirate patches and witches hats ready for the Haunting of Hogg Park. This event will be held at the Quitman Arboretum on Halloween with help and support from the City of Quitman, Quitman Chamber of Commerce, several local banks, businesses, and civic organizations.

There will be age appropriate activities for all including: food concessions, hay rides, Hay Scramble (hunting for coins in a pile of hay), Spooky Trails, Spooky Stories, Pet Costume Contest, Kid’s Costume Contest, Scream Contest, and a Pre-Carved Pumpkin Contest.

The fun will begin at 5:30 and continue until 8. The Spooky Trails will be ready to “knock your socks off” from 6:45 until 8.

Alba

The Alba Fall Fest and Halloween on the Square is Saturday from 3-8 p.m. There are several activities for the annual event including a 5K run and chili cook-off.

The inaugural 5K Zombie Fun Run begins at 3 p.m. Runners will run a course through downtown Alba and zombies, with film quality special effects, will be around every corner waiting for runners. The goal is to make it through the course with your flags (lives). Registration is $40 and includes the race, a T-shirt and a whole lot of bone-chilling fun. Online registration required at active.com.

If you believe you have the best pot of chili in Alba, enter it in the inaugural Chili Cook-Off for a chance to win cash prizes. The grand prize is $100 with a second ($75) and third ($50) place prize awarded as well. The entry fee for the cook-off is $15 and there is a five-gallon minimum. Chili can be purchased for $5 a bowl and judging begins at 4 p.m.

Local businesses, churches and organizations will set up activity booths that include carnival style games, face painting and more. Local community members are encouraged to set up on the square for one big trunk or treat. Up to $100 in cash prizes will be given for the best decorated trunk.

This year’s activities will also include a costume contest for children up to 10 years of age with prizes given to the winners of three age categories. There will be hay rides that run continuously throughout the event.

Hawkins

There will be trick or treat event on Halloween at the Hawkins City Park. The event is hosted by the Hawkins Area Chamber of Commerce and the Hawkins Volunteer Fire Department. Admission will be one canned food item and Brookshire’s will donate food so that no child will be turned away. All food collected will be donated to Hawkins Helping Hands.
