Mineola Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts have now canceled the traditional flag retirement ceremony on the Fourth of July.

The ceremony had been planned for 7 p.m. at the Mineola Civic Center just east of the main entrance.

There will be no speaker, and observers are urged not to congregate but to watch from vehicles.

Scout Troop 385 plans to have four Scouts on hand to participate and Cub Pack 385 will have three Cubs.

The solemn flag retirement ceremony includes burning flags that have become faded, tattered or otherwise in disrepair.

Boy Scouts are among the organizations authorized to hold such ceremonies.
