Mineola VFW post to be awarded Purple Heart designation

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7523 in Mineola will be officially designated as a Purple Heart Post on Saturday, March 30, followed by a celebration at 3 p.m. All veterans, citizens of Mineola, and supporters of veterans are welcome to the designation.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in use, tracing its roots to the first badges of military merit presented by George Washington in 1782. It is the first American service award made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to any member of the U.S. Armed Forces wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States.

The purpose of a Purple Heart designation is to serve as a reminder that freedom isn’t free. Coincidentally, the VFW 7523’s Junior Vice Commander, Eric Walter, is a Purple Heart recipient.

Designating a Purple Heart Post is not necessarily just to recognize those who have been awarded a Purple Heart but a way to honor all veterans’ valiant service.

The event is sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart DFW Mid-Cities Chapter.
