Mineola woman dies in Anderson County
A Mineola woman was killed and five others injured in a head-on traffic crash near Elkhart on Saturday, Jan. 27.
Mary Merlino, 22, died in the crash when the vehicle in which she was a passenger was struck by another vehicle.
According to the Dept. of Public Safety preliminary report, a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was southbound on US 287 just south of Elkhart when it struck a 2018 Honda Accord it was following, pushing the Honda into oncoming traffic where it collided with a 2007 Ford Taurus.
Brian Scruggs, 21, of Elkhart, driver of the pickup, Canette Fry, 48, of Palestine, driver of the Accord and a passenger, Tyler Elkhatib, 18, of Palestine were taken to Palestine Regional medical Center.
Justin Benton, 23, driver of the Taurus, was taken to Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. A passenger, Isabelle Benton, 1-year-old, was taken to Palestine Regional.
All but Justin Benton were wearing seat belts. The crash occurred at 6:18 p.m. in a 70 mile-per-hour speed zone.
