Dear editor,

Thought you and your readers who were not able to attend the Lake Country Symphonic Band Sousa Palooza concert on Sunday might enjoy a brief recap.

What a delightful way to spend an afternoon, with 18 tunes delightfully presented by a local group, ranging in age from the early teens to folks in their 90s! Regardless of age, they all played their hearts out!

The mix of well-known and some seldom-heard marches provided something for all in the attendance, showcasing various sections of the symphonic band throughout. The piccolo section was especially strong and the playfulness of the group, as evidenced by “The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas” and the wearing of props during some specific tunes was fun to watch!

I’ve heard many bands, including the “Marine Corps Own 8th & I St Band” in Washington, DC strike up the “Semper Fidelis” march, and none were finer than Maestro Holbrook’s rendition! To top it off, the encore of “Stars and Stripes Forever” had everyone on their feet, clapping and cheering!

Can’t wait for the next concert and I hope others will enjoy this well-kept treasure.

Warm regards,

Greg Hollen

To the editor,

What a grand music event played at the Historic Select Theater last week! The Lake Country Symphonic Band completely filled the stage. Under the direction of Mike Holbrook they played patriotic American music compositions of John Philip Sousa.

The nearly full house responded enthusiastically to Conductor Holbrook’s unique and colorful style that fused historical anecdotes and music theory with Sousa musical selections that were sure to please. He appeared on stage “Sousa style” in a red period military band jacket with gold trim and center-part hair style, mustache and spectacles. In addition, since the Mineola High School Prom planners have already received permission to keep the prom in Mineola and use public facilities this year, they appealed to the audience to help pay for certain necessary renovations to the theater -- the audience generously responded! Mineola has a treasure in this movie theater, playhouse and concert stage.
