No burn ban yet for county
Wood County commissioners declined to adopt a ban on outdoor burning Tuesday.
While several area counties have adopted bans in recent days, commissioners decided to table the matter for two weeks.
Fire Marshal Tully Davidson advised commissioners could meet again in special session if the need for a burn ban becomes evident.
“Our information says to wait a couple of weeks and put the burn ban back on the agenda if necessary,” Davidson said. “We have had a lot more rain north of Interstate 20. I feel like we can wait another two weeks.”
Neighboring counties to adopt bans include Upshur, Smith and Van Zandt while Rains, Hopkins, Franklin and Camp had not enacted bans as of Tuesday morning.
Wood County commissioners can again consider a ban when they meet on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
As of Tuesday there were 173 bans in place among the state’s 254 counties.
Many of the counties yet to approve bans are in Northeast Texas and the Panhandle, as well as the Houston area and some areas of South Texas.
