Popular weenie dog race gets a new starting gate

Mineola’s Iron Horse Heritage Festival Weenie Dog Race will have a bright, new look to go along with a payoff of $200 in cash and prizes and trophy inscription for the winner when the gate goes up on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. 

A new starting gate and course fence, courtesy of Bailey’s Ace Hardware, highlights the changes in store for the hundreds of race enthusiasts attending the event. Registration continues until Sept. 20.

Pure and mixed breeds are welcome as long as entrants provide proof of dachshund genetics, vaccination records and pay a $25 entry fee. All information and sign-up requirements are available online at mineolachamber.org. 

The Iron Horse Heritage Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 23. Entertainment will be on tap all day in Mineola’s downtown district. Food and artisan vendors and exciting contests will highlight the day’s events:
