Program marks brick streets centennial

Among the celebrations throughout the year in honor of the city of Mineola’s 150th anniversary is another important milestone.

The brick streets of Mineola turn 100 years old this summer, and the Mineola Landmark Commission will mark that event.

It also coincides with another key date in the city’s history.

Just a few weeks after the city was incorporated in May 1873, the two railroads that were racing to connect in Mineola came together in July 1873.

Please note that the July 1 program has been postponed. The new date will be announced later.

A program is planned on Saturday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at the historic Select Theater in downtown Mineola (N. Johnson St.).

Landmark commission chairman Jimmy Phillips is creating a collection of photographs to mark the 15 decades of the city’s history and will share his historical expertise on the city and the brick streets.

The theater concession stand will be open for refreshments.

Following the presentation a historical marker dedication will be held at the downtown gazebo.

The following week, on July 8 at 10 a.m., the Mineola Historical Museum will also help celebrate the sesquicentennial by unveiling the contents of the cornerstone from the United States post office that was erected in 1936 and now houses the museum.

The museum will be open for tours of its historical collection, and refreshments will be served after the program.
