Quitman art students use talents to make things a little merrier

Two Quitman art students managed to combine a good deed with using their talents on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

High schoolers Sage Harville and Jessica Van Vleet were painting a nativity scene on the windows of the Instant Offices of Texas building for several hours.

“It’s fun. It’s a good challenge for them, and they have to do it publicly, which is kind of [different],” said their art teacher, Aaron Vanderschaaf. “A lot of times you can do your artwork and just kind of hide it until you have to turn it in, but here there’s people around us,” he said.

The girls not only do art as a hobby: they both would like to use it as a future career.

“I want to be a tattoo artist,” says Harville. “[That’s because] there’s a lot of talented people out there, and it’s really hard to succeed in the art business and live off of it without having a side job. And, tattoos are cool and it fits my aura,” Harville says with a smile.

While Van Vleet is currently exploring her career options, she says that implementing art into her future career “would be fun to do if I could.”

“I want to be a teacher of some sort. So that could lean more towards art, or it could lean more towards music, because I’m in the band, too,” she says. “I always liked art – I thought it was cool.”

The window features three wise men, Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. Although their teacher had previously sketched the outlines of the scene in order to save time, the skillfully colored and shaded scene has added a sweet Christmas charm to the building.

Interestingly, doing these works of art has become almost a tradition for the students of Quitman High School’s art class. For several years, these and other QISD art students have volunteered to create beautiful Christmas scenes on the windows of various shops in downtown Quitman.

The girls got class credit for their efforts, since the project took place during class time.

As they continue to show effort and passion for their work, these girls will continue to show great promise as future artists. To see their artwork, it is located on the windows of 212 E. Goode St. in Quitman, next door to the Quitman Public Library.
